Edo suspends school resumption over fuel price hike

The recent hike in the price of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), otherwise called petrol has started taking tolls on Nigerians with Edo State Government announcing an indefinite postponement of resumption of all schools in the state over the uncertain development.

The recent hike in the price of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), otherwise called petrol has started taking tolls on Nigerians with Edo State Government announcing an indefinite postponement of resumption of all schools in the state over the uncertain development.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that by the new twist, the resumption, originally scheduled for September 9, was postponed until further notice.

The government announced this in a memo by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Ojo Akin-Longe, in Benin on Saturday.

The release stated:

“The Edo State Government hereby announces the postponement of the resumption of all public and private schools in Edo State, originally scheduled for Monday, 9th September 2024, until further notice.

“An official statement from the government has directed that schools remain closed due to the tension arising from the recent increase in fuel prices and the challenges faced by parents and guardians.

“The government urges parents, guardians, and caregivers to monitor the activities of their children and wards closely, given the current situation and the rising tension caused by the fuel price hike,” Akin-Longe said.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), had on Tuesday, announced an increase in the pump price of petrol. The hike took the product pump price from N617/litre to N897/liter, depending on location.

It only took a short statement from the NNPCL to effect the new price regime. The release stated; “This is to inform you that NNPC Retail Management has approved upward review of PMS pump price from N617/itre to N897/liter effective today, 3rd September, 2024. Please ensure all your pumps and totems (price boards)/MIDs reflect the new PMS price of N897/liter. Thank you”.

The announcement instantly sent shock waves across the country, triggering high costs in goods, services and transport fares. Many Nigerians and groups, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) and National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), have faulted the price hike, calling for reversal to previous rate.
