The Edo State Government has directed the police to prosecute students of Igbinedion Education Centre and their parents over the brutal assault of a fellow student.
The Commissioner for Information, Kassim Afegbua, made this known on Monday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, describing the incident as deeply troubling and confirming that the Governor Monday Okpebholo-led administration had set up a committee to get to the root of the matter.
“It is quite disturbing when we heard it. We were just wondering what could have warranted this,” Afegbua said, adding that the government had already moved to expel the students involved.
“It is not just about the expulsion; we also directed the police to make sure that those students are properly arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law,” he stated.
Afegbua disclosed that the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, had assured the state government that the parents of the erring students would report to the police headquarters in Benin City, and that prosecution would follow the conclusion of investigations.
The commissioner also issued a warning to parents and school authorities alike.
“It is a wake-up call to parents and also teachers because one would expect an educational centre like Igbinedion Centre to naturally have its own code of ethics in terms of discipline, monitoring, and internal vigilance on their students,” he said.
The viral footage, which has circulated widely on social media, shows two students repeatedly beating, kicking, and dragging a boy believed to be in a junior class. One attacker used a belt during the assault while another stomped on the victim’s chest, leaving him crying in pain as a student recording the video pleaded with the attackers to stop.
The reason for the assault remains unclear.
