Edo Assembly suspends all LGA chairpersons, deputies over misconduct

The Edo State House of Assembly has suspended all chairpersons and their deputies across the 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state for two months over allegations of gross misconduct and misappropriation of funds.

The decision was made during a plenary session on Tuesday following a heated debate.

Heads of the legislative arms in each LGA have been instructed to oversee council operations during the suspension period.

The motion for suspension was moved by Isibor Adeh, representing Esan North-East I, and seconded by Donald Okogbe, representing Akoko-Edo Constituency II.

Speaker of the House Blessing Agbebaku disclosed that Governor Monday Okpebholo had petitioned the assembly, accusing the LGA chairpersons of refusing to submit their financial records to the state government.

Agbebaku said the governor described their actions as insubordination and gross misconduct, prompting the assembly to investigate the matter.

During the debate, 14 lawmakers supported the motion for suspension, six opposed it, while three abstained.
