Eddie Howe says he is excited to be appointed the head coach of Newcastle after the exit of Steve Bruce. But the challenges are enormous

After weeks of searching for a replacement for the sacked Steve Bruce, Eddie Howe has now been announced as the new head coach of Newcastle on a contract until summer 2024.

Howe, who has been out of work since leaving Bournemouth in 2020 following their relegation from the Premier League, replaces Steve Bruce at St James’ Park.

Newcastle had previously reached out to former Arsenal and current Villarreal boss Unai Emery about the vacancy, but he opted to remain with the Laliga side.

“It is a great honour to become head coach of a club with the stature and history of Newcastle United,” said Howe, who will take training at the club for the first time on Tuesday.

“It is a very proud day for me and my family.

“This is a wonderful opportunity, but there is also a lot of work ahead of us and I am eager to get onto the training ground to start working with the players.

“I would like to thank the club’s owners for this opportunity and thank the club’s supporters for the incredible welcome they have already given me.

I am very excited to begin our journey together

Eddie Howe’s full name is Edward John Frank Howe, born on November 29, 1977. He was a former player.

A defender during his playing career, Howe spent most of his playing career with AFC Bournemouth, coming up through the youth system and spending eight years with the club, before returning for a second three-year spell to end his career, and retiring from the professional game in 2007.

He entered management the following year, taking charge of a Bournemouth side facing relegation to the Conference National in January 2009 as the youngest manager in the Football League.

Under his guidance, Bournemouth were able to survive relegation during his first season in charge, having started the season on minus 17 points, and were promoted to League One the following campaign.
