Ebonyi police station attacked as gunmen free inmates

-

Unknown gunmen have attacked an Ebonyi police station in the Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state. The gunmen, it was gathered, stormed the police station at about 2 am, releasing suspects already in the facility, which is a divisional police headquarters.

According to some news reports, the gunmen shot at officers at the Ebonyi police station with some of them escaping with bullet wounds.

Ebonyi, Anambra and Imo have become the epicentre of attacks in the South East. The perpetrators of the attacks and their motives remain unknown, except for speculation of some attributing it to the Independent Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), the separatist group seeking the independence of the South East region from Nigeria.

Others have claimed that the attacks could be coming from security agencies in a bid to tarnish the image of IPOB among young South Easterners.

According to an online newspaper, Sahara Reporters, Loveth Odah, Ebonyi State Police Command spokesperson confirmed the incident, saying the police commissioner was on his way to the scene to ascertain the level of damage.

The incident is the latest in what appears to be a growing trend of attacks on police stations and security personnel in the South-East region of the country.

In the last few months, several Ebonyi police stations have been attacked,  offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission torched in Anambra and people killed in Imo.

Despite that the governors in the region recently announced the establishment of a joint security outfit codenamed ‘Ebube Agu’ to “battle rising insecurity,” the activities of the unknown gunmen keeps increasing.
