Brazil’s Football Federation (CBF) has confirmed the appointment of Dunga as Brazil coach.
The appointment of he 1994 World Cup-winning captain makes it this his second stint in charge of the team, having coached Brazil for a total of four years beginning from 2006 until 2010.
By the appointment, Dunga has succeeded Luiz Felipe Scolari, who left the post after Brazil’s quest to claim the first World Cup on home soil ended in a humiliating 7-1 defeat to Germany in the semi-final of the 2014 World Cup.
During Dunga’s previous spell, he won 42 and lost just six of his 60 games in charge, guiding Brazil to the Copa America 2007 and Confederations Cup 2009 titles although he was fiercely criticised for what his critics call his largely pragmatic approach as opposed to the attacking style for which Brazil is known.
A 50-year old, Dunga was fired after losing a quarter final match of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa to Holland.
Dunga’s only other experience in the dugout came at Brazilian club Internacional last year, in which he was dismissed after suffering four straight league defeats.
His first Brazil squad will be announced in late August ahead of the Selecao’s Gillette Brasil Global Tour friendly fixtures with Colombia and Ecuador in the United States.
