In a stunning start to their 2024 Olympics campaign, Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, secured a momentous victory over Australia in their first Group B game. The African champions, ranked eighth in the world, defeated the world’s third-best team 75-62 at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium on Monday, marking their first Olympic win in 20 years.

Head coach Rena Wakama’s strategic selection paid off, with returning point guard Ezinne Kalu, 2023 Afrobasket MVP Amy Okonkwo, team captain Elizabeth Balogun, Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah, and Promise Amukamara leading the charge. Kalu, a seasoned player who has excelled in previous major tournaments like Tokyo 2020 and the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2018, delivered a standout performance with 19 points, five rebounds, and five assists.

Despite entering the tournament as underdogs, ranked 12th among the participating teams, D’Tigress displayed remarkable determination and skill. However, as they prepare for their next game against hosts France on Thursday, fans and experts alike have cautioned the team against complacency.

Chukwuemeka Oraegbune urged the team to maintain their focus, stating, “You guys did great and are now viewed as strong contenders. Please don’t get distracted, keep focus. Take it one game at a time.” Iniobong Akai echoed this sentiment, warning, “I wish they will focus on the next game as others are studying their game plans. Over-celebration is always an undoing.”

While congratulating the team, Popoola Tolulope emphasized the importance of perseverance, saying, “Congratulations. We are proud of you guys, keep up the amazing work. Gold is the target and let’s keep pressing forward.” Baba Ajao-Taiwo added, “Well done but it’s only the beginning. Let’s keep the momentum.”

Abel Phanuel highlighted the need for continued aggression and effort, “Such a great performance from you guys on Monday, the job isn’t done yet. Let’s go even harder and aggressive to the remaining of our opponents.” Uguba Chinenye succinctly advised, “Let’s keep them on their toes.”

D’Tigress will look to build on their impressive start as they face France before concluding their group stage against Canada.
