DSS arrests blogger for allegedly faking its recruitment notice; EFCC nabs four Chinese, 101 Nigerians over internet fraud

DSS arrests blogger for faking its recruitment notice, allegedly angling to defraud the public

Sylvester Victor Augustus, a blogger, has been arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) for allegedly being the mastermind of the recent fake recruitment notice posted on the website of the secret police.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has also disclosed its arrest of  four Chinese and 104 Nigerians in a business apartment in the Gudu axis of Abuja over alleged internet fraud.

Augustus, 32, was arrested for allegedly cloning the DSS website on which a notice was placed to falsely inform the public that the agency was recruiting.

The DSS said Augustine, a native of Abak Council in Akwa Ibom was tracked and arrested at his residence on Akpan Eno Lane in Abak, Abak Council on Thursday, and that he claimed to be a graduate of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO), a blogger, and content creator.

“Augustus had cloned the DSS website on which he created a fake online recruitment notice, apparently with the intent of defrauding unsuspecting members of the public,” a source in DSS told The Nation.

The DSS had tagged the post “fake” and cautioned members of the public not to fall into hands of fraudsters.

The suspect will soon be arraigned in court, it was learnt.

EFCC arrests four Chinese, 101 Nigerians

In its own announcement, the EFCC said the arrest of four Chinese and 101 Nigerians is part of ongoing efforts to clean the country of internet fraud and other acts of corruption.

A statement issued by EFCC Head of Media and Publicity Dele Oyewale confirmed they were arrested on Thursday.

“The suspects, comprising 67 male (including four Chinese) and 38 female  were  allegedly  involved in hotel review job scam targeting victims and hotels in Europe and other parts of the world,” the statement said.

“The suspects will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.”
