Dowen College comes up again in the news as five students are charged with conspiracy and homicide, which is the legal term for murder

The trial of five Dowen College students who allegedly beat up Sylvestre Oromoni to death has commenced at a Yaba Chief Magistrate Court, Lagos.

The five students, all under-aged, were charged with the alleged murder of their 12-year-old schoolmate, Sylvester Oromoni, the News Agency of Nigeria reported.

They were admitted to bail in the sum of one million naira each on Tuesday by a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ court in Lagos.

After hearing the bail application from the defendants’ counsel, chief magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun-Adedayo ordered the defendants to produce two sureties each in like sum.

Ms Olatunbosun-Adedayo said that one of each of the defendants’ surety must be their parent, and must swear an affidavit of compliance.

She further held that the international passports of all the defendants must be submitted to the court, their residence must be verified by the prosecutor and they must stay within two kilometres of their residence at all times.

Defence counsel Ifeoma Eson, A.E. Amah, Godwin Omoaka (SAN), Eze Ajibo and Michael Ayinla were in court for the minors.

The defendants were, on December 9, remanded in a juvenile home over the death of Sylvester Oromoni. He was allegedly attacked in a case of bullying while in school.

TheNiche had reported that at least five SS2 students of Dowen College allegedly descended on the young Sylvester Oromoni, the 12-year-old boy battered by his own schoolmates, and died a few days later.

He died after battling internal injuries he sustained from the fatal assault. But Dowen College claimed the injuries were caused by a fall during a football match.

That statement is now haunting Dowen College because the injuries do not match the type a lad playing soccer could suffer.

Perrie Oromoni, a cousin of the deceased, tweeting via his handle,@Perrisonoromoni, alleged that no fewer than five SS2 students of Dowen College assaulted his brother because he refused to join their cult.

He said his brother, while on a hospital bed, provided the names of the Dowen College boys to his family.  They were minors, hence can’t be published.

According to him, the boys were easy to identify because Oromoni’s sister, who also is a student of Dowen College, knows them.
