Telephone subscribers have been warned by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) not to buy or use pre-registered Subscriber Identity/Identification Module (SIM) cards, because it is illegal to do so, and comes with severe consequences, including jail term.
Besides, the NCC said users of SIM cards registered in the name of someone else may be implicated in crimes such as identity theft, financial fraud, kidnapping, and armed robbery.
The telecom regulator stressed in a statement the use of such SIM cards compromises consumer information accuracy and hampers efforts to track criminals.
“Using pre-registered SIM cards undermines the reliability of data collected on consumers, making it challenging for authorities to identify and apprehend the actual perpetrators of crimes,” the statement explained.
It urged Nigerians to avoid buying pre-registered SIM cards and to ensure their SIM cards are properly registered in their names to avoid potential legal repercussions.
