Domestic airfares up nearly 100% officially. More than that in reality

Domestic airfares rose 96.87 per cent in the past year as documented by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), an official figure at variance with reality in some cases where the cost has gone up more than 200 per cent.
NBS “Transport Fare Watch” for September 2022, the latest report, shows average fare for specified routes single journey increased 96.87 per cent year-on-year (YoY) from N36,922.97 in September 2021.
It hiked 11.76 per cent month-on-month (MoM) from N65,041.89 in August 2022 to N72,690.54 in September.
The report said average fare for bus journeys within city per drop slashed 2.19 per cent from N602.48 in August 2022 to N615.69 in September.
But it rose 41.42 per cent YoY from N435.36 in September 2021 to N615.69 in September 2022.

Motorcycle taxi, water transport fares
Average fare for bus journey intercity per drop rose to N3,790.06 in September 2022, an increase of 0.27 per cent MoM compared with N3,779.96 in August 2022, according to the NBS, per The PUNCH.
The fare increased 44.61 per cent YoY from N2,620.90 in September 2021.
Average fare for Okada (motorcycle taxi) transport was N434.73 in September 2022. which was 1.15 per cent lower than N439.80 in August 2022.
YoY, the fare rose 41.79 per cent from N306.80 in September 2011.
“The average fare paid for water transport (waterway passenger transportation) in September 2022 increased to N980.18 showing a growth of 0.61% on a month-on-month basis, from N974.26 in August 2022.
“On year-on-year, the fare rose by 15.44% from N849.06 in September 2021 to N980.20 in September 2022,” the report said.
Road transport fares in June, July
The NBS reported in August that average fare for bus journeys within the city per drop, increased 3.46 per cent MoM from N582.61 in June to N602.77 in July.
The NBS also said:
Average fare for bus journeys within the city per drop rose 44.76 YoY from N416.38 in July 2021 to N602.77 in July 2022.
Average fare for bus journey intercity per drop rose to N3,758.46 in July 2022, an increase of 2.61 per cent MoM versus N3,662.87 in June 2022.
The fare jumped 47.85 YoY from N2,542.02 in July 2021.
Average fare for water transport (waterway passenger transportation) in July 2022 increased to N965.82 or by 2.39 per cent MoM from N943.26 in June 2022.
It grew 15.56 per cent YoY from N835.77 in July 2021 to N965.82 in July 2022.
