Desperate politicians behind rising insecurity in Anambra – Obiano

-

By Emma Ogbuehi

Anambra state governor, Willie Obiano, has blamed the spiraling insecurity in the state on the desperation by the political class ahead of the November 6 governorship election in the state. The aim, he alleged, is to cause fear and confusion among the people so as to create room for malpractices in the poll. He however assured that his administration is on top of the situation and would not allow mischief makers have their way.

The governor made the remarks in his special broadcast to the state on the occasion of the country’s 61st independence anniversary.  Obiano decried the orgy of violence that has been the lot of the state, accusing internal enemies of being behind the scourge. Resort to violence, he said, is not in the character of the average Anambra person. “We are confronted by the sight of evil and the brazen display of callousness that is alien to our people. We see our brothers and sister bleed to death from wounds inflicted by their fellow compatriots”, the governor lamented.

He pointedly accused desperate politicians in the state as being responsible for the regime of insecurity, vowing to beat them in their own game.

He said; “The approaching election has created a strange desperation among the political class leading to acts that are not only inimical to the regime of peace that my administration has entrenched in our beloved state for eight years but also a threat to democracy.

“The deliberate attempt to heat up the system and create the impression of chaos in Anambra State is a ploy by desperate political leaders to wet the ground and provide a perfect alibi for electoral malpractices. We are aware of this plot; and we shall resist it with all our might”!

He pledged that his administration would not allow some unconscionable politicians turn Anambra into a theater of crime and absurdity, adding; “The negative identity they are trying to foist on Anambra State shall not prevail”.

Anambra has been in the throes of insecurity lately with killings in many communities in the state. The latest high profile victim was Chike Akunyili, consultant surgeon and husband of the erstwhile Director General of the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), late Prof. Dora Akunyili, who was felled at Nkpor junction, last week.

A House of Representatives member, Chris Azubuogu, narrowly escaped death when his convoy was attacked by unknown gunmen in Nnobi axis of the state. The same day, a Police station in Ajali community was razed.
