The Labour Party (LP) vice presidential candidate in the February 25 general election, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has insisted the verdict of the Supreme Court in the 2023 presidential election was not an affirmation of the victory of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to the Labour Party chieftain, the judges merely upheld what he described as the illegal result declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The former federal lawmaker made the assertion on Monday evening while speaking as a guest on an Arise TV programme.

Prior to this development, his principal, Peter Obi, had addressed the press on the outcome of the judicial process in the aftermath of the election.

The LP presidential candidate had approached the apex court to challenge the ruling of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT), which upheld INEC’s declaration of Tinubu as the winner of the election.

However, while delivering judgement, the apex court stood by PEPT’s decision, declaring Tinubu as the duly elected president.

Speaking during the TV chat, Datti Baba-Ahmed said though they have accepted the verdict of the Supreme Court, he and his boss do not see the ruling as a valid one.

He said: “Please quote me on this: the Appeal and Supreme Courts did not affirm Tinubu’s presidency. They merely upheld the illegality of INEC’s declaration.

“We accepted the judgment because it was the last step for HE Peter Obi and I to take; we rejected and did not accept it as a valid judgment.”
