Customs impounds 9 trucks of smuggled rice, stores them in warehouse

Officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) have confiscated nine trucks loaded with bags of smuggled rice around the Nigerian-Benin border in Ogun State.

The Comptroller of the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) zone A, Kola Oladeji, disclosed in Lagos that the interception was achieved by officers in the zone who prevented the smugglers from carting in the commodity from the Republic of Benin.

According to him, the smugglers abandoned their vehicles after sighting the operatives.

He also announced that the command deployed six extra buses and 11 patrol vehicles to convey the seizures to the customs warehouse.

“And, when our officers realized this, in compliance with our strategy of not shooting at any smugglers, they hired trucks and used some of our patrol vehicles to convey the items here.

“A breakdown of the vehicles used for conveying the seized bags of rice from the locations were nine trucks, six buses, and 11 patrol vehicles owned by the Nigeria Customs,” Oladeji said.
