Customs commences scanning containers that arrive at night

The Tin Can Island Command of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has commenced the process of attaining 24 hour port operation with the scanning of 56 imported containers at night

Comptroller Dera Nnadi, Customs Area Controller of Tin Can Island Port Command who disclosed this in Lagos at his maiden parade with officers and men under his watch expressed optimism that the seamless operations at the airports can be replicated at the seaport

According to him, the drive has received the buy in of other agencies like the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and terminal operators

Nnadi said the NPA has promised to illuminate the terminals with bright lightening system to support the night operations.

He disclosed that the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi had concurred with the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola on the possible attainment of nonstop port operations.

He added that the business of import and export is international in nature and that across various time zones in the world, when someone is sleeping, containers are being loaded for export to other parts of the world.

The Area Controller thanked his officers for their dedication to duty through compliance with his directives to resume work by 8am and close by 6pm in addition to coming to work during weekends.

He urged officers to brace up to knowledge acquisition and sharpen their competencies in various aspects of customs capacity building like World Customs Organization (WHO) and other courses whose certifications are relevant to their job.

He said the command will honour two officers who rejected $54,200 bribe from smugglers of prohibited tramadol
