“Let me tell you this: the biggest single issue, in security terms, confronting the South-East, in my estimation, based on the work I have done on this, is, I regret to disappoint you, not IPOB, it is one word: cults, financed by politicians.
“All right? Now, the cults are the biggest single issue, and you don’t have a clue how terrible the problem of cults in the South-East is at this particular time” – Odinkalu.

Politicians are the ones sponsoring cultism that fuels insecurity in the South East, Chidi Odinkalu has declared, insisting the menace should not be blamed on Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) separatist agitators.
Odinkalu, a law Professor and human rights activist, admitted on Channels Television that separatist agitation contributes to insecurity in the South East, but argued that the idea is ridiculous that every hiccup in the region is flared up by IPOB.
Said he: “Let me tell you this: the biggest single issue, in security terms, confronting the South-East, in my estimation, based on the work I have done on this, is, I regret to disappoint you, not IPOB, it is one word: cults, financed by politicians.
“All right? Now, the cults are the biggest single issue, and you don’t have a clue how terrible the problem of cults in the South-East is at this particular time.”
Regardless, observers and security agencies attribute South East insecurity mainly to the activities of IPOB, whose leader, Nnamdi Kanu, has been in detention since July 2021 on alleged treason charges that have played out with twists and turns.
