The Cross River State Police Command has arrested and detained a criminal police corporal, Buba Adamu, who had failed to report to a new station under the Kaduna State Command since 2015.
The detained corporal who was alleged to have been carrying out illegal activities using his uniform in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, was also accused of impersonation.
Adamu has reportedly been operating as a “Mobile Police Officer”(MOPOL)since 2015 without any supervision or accountability to a specific police command.
TheNiche learnt that he had been receiving his salary during the period, despite not reporting to his new station.
Adamu’s deception was uncovered when members of the Nasarawa Community, a Hausa/Fulani settlement in Calabar Municipality, became victims of his ‘unlawful actions’.
The people raised the alarm when they learnt that the police command was under pressure to release Adamu.
They feared that releasing Adamu would be detrimental to their safety and well-being as he had allegedly been intimidating a lot of people in the area.
The Nasarawa Community claimed many people had fallen victim to his alleged nefarious activities, as he had been assuming the role of a Divisional Police Officer without any oversight.
It was gathered that the Cross River State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) SP Irene Ugbo confirmed Adamu’s detention.
According to PPRO, the corporal will be in detention while an investigation into the matter continues.
“It is true that the said officer was transferred from Cross River to Kaduna State in 2015 and no one knew he didn’t report at his new station ever since.
“There are allegations that he has been carrying out criminal activities around Bacoco, Nasarawa area of Calabar, all these will be investigated to prosecute him,” the police spokesperson said.
