The Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC), Anambra Chapter, has inaugurated a 12-member labour/civil society situation room to protect workers’ jobs and wages following the economic threats occasioned by COVID-19.

Inaugurating the situation room in Awka on Thursday, June 11, the state NLC chairman, Mr Jerry Nnubia said the body would help to engage the government on how best to gradually and systematically open up the economy for business and production.

According to him, the Situation Room will serve as an engine room for information dissemination and sensitisation of workers and citizens on COVID-19 reality, prevalence, and prevention and containment measures.

“To protect jobs, wages and means of livelihood of Nigerians and serve as a think tank to liaise and advise government on the strategy going forward.

“It will embark on advocacy and social dialogue with government and private sector employers to promote public health and employment/income protection for workers.

“It will also partner with all relevant stake holders in the state in order to enable it achieve its set objectives, Nnubia said.

The chairman said the body would maintain a feedback relationship between workers, workers’ organisations, government and employers in the private sector.

Nnubia, therefore, appealed to all trade unions, public spirited organisations and individuals including the media to utilize all the opportunities the situation room had to offer.

The members of the team were drawn from the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), Nigeria Union of Teachers ( NUT) and Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), amongst others. (NAN)
