Anxiety is mounting in Nigeria as the country on Saturday recorded 17 new coronavirus deaths in a single day.

According to the data released by the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC), with the 17 new fatalities, the total number of deaths in the country now stands at 85.

As of Saturday, Nigeria has also recorded 2388 confirmed cases.

NCDC on Saturday tweeted: “220 new cases of #COVID19;

“2388 confirmed cases of #COVID19 in Nigeria
Discharged: 385, deaths 85.”

With 85 officially confirmed deaths, Nigeria now has lost more people to the pandemic than any other country in the West African sub-region. The country also ranks fifth in Africa.

But with the very limited number of tests and deaths outside hospitals, there are fears that these statistics may well be a tip of the iceberg.

Meanwhile, as of May 1, 2020, 239,345 persons have died from the disease globally
