An Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court, on Thursday, ordered the remand of one Damilola Olugbade, 19, in a correctional centre for allegedly causing the death of one Mrs Mufiliate Adebayo.
The defendant, whose plea was not taken, is facing a two- count charge of conspiracy and manslaughter.
The Police Prosecutor, Inspector Adekunle Opayemi, told the court that the defendant, with others now at large, committed the offences on Oct. 8, at about 8 pm. at Oke Ibukun area of Abeokuta.
Opayemi said that the defendant unlawfully caused the death of a 55-year-old woman, Mufiliate Adebayo, by accidentally giving her a fist blow on the face.
He said that the deceased’s son and the defendant, who was his friend, were fighting over a phone charger.
The prosecutor stated that the defendant had alleged that the deceased’s son stole his charger while he was charging his phone in their shop.
“The accusation led to a fight and the deceased’s son injured the defendant on the leg.
”The defendant, on getting home, told his elder brother what had happened and out of anger, took two of his friends to the deceased’s son house to attack him.
”While shouting upon getting there, the deceased, who was the mother of the defendant’s friend, came out to plead for settlement.
“In the process, the defendant gave the decease a fist blow, after which she fell down and was unconscious. She was then taken to the hospital but she later died,” he told the court.
Opayemi said that the offence contravened Sections 324, 317 and 325 of the Criminal Code, Law of Ogun, 2006.
The Magistrate, Mr Dehinde Dipeolu, ordered that the defendant be remanded in the Oba Correctional Centre, pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).
He, thereafter, adjourned the case till Dec. 9, for mention. (NAN)
