Court orders arrest of Mercy Chinwo’s manager over alleged $345,000 diversion

By Jeffrey Agbo

A Federal High Court in Lagos has issued a warrant for the arrest of Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu, manager of gospel singer Mercy Chinwo, over allegations of diverting $345,000 in royalties and event earnings.

Justice Alexander Owoeye ordered the arrest on Thursday following an ex-parte motion filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

During the court session, Mrs Bilikisu Buhari, counsel for the EFCC, cited provisions of the 1999 Constitution and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, in support of the application. She argued that the warrant was necessary to compel Onyedikachukwu’s appearance in court to answer charges of financial misconduct.

Buhari informed the court that if the commission failed to arrest the manager, it would seek a public summons to declare him wanted.

The case stems from a petition filed by Mercy, alleging that Onyedikachukwu collected royalties from her digital platforms and proceeds from events without disclosure or remittance of her rightful share. According to an affidavit deposed by EFCC investigator Michael Idoko, the manager is accused of diverting approximately $345,000.

The EFCC stated that efforts to apprehend Onyedikachukwu had been unsuccessful, prompting the court application.

Justice Owoeye granted the warrant and adjourned the case until January 24, 2025, for the manager’s arraignment.
