Court grants activist Olamide Thomas bail

An Abuja High Court has granted bail to Olamide Abiodun Thomas, an activist charged with four criminal counts including insult to the president’s son, Seyi Tinubu and police chiefs.

The alleged insult followed Ms Thomas’ protest against the police’s use of tear gas against her and other protesters who took to the streets to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the #EndSARS movement against police brutality at the Lekki Tollgate. Tinubu’s son, Seyi, owns an advert company around the Tollgate.

Olamide was arrested in the first week of December and left to spend both Christmas and New Year in detention.

On Monday January 6, the court granted her bail although with stringent conditions, according to activist Omoyele Sowore.

He posted via his X handle, “Nurse OLAMIDE has been granted bail this morning in Abuja, though bail conditions were stringent and unduly oppressive; we will keep fighting Nigeria’s Police Force @PoliceNG and its incompetent and compromised leaders for their abuse and irresponsible conduct. #FreeOlamideNow.”
