Presidential candidate of the National Conscience Party (NCP) in the 2015 election, Martins Onovo, has said that the recent Transparency International report that corruption is getting worse in Nigeria is a confirmation of the obvious.
He also said that the country was more corrupt now as those involved were being shielded by the powers that be.
Besides, he said that the report was a confirmation of his earlier position that corruption was wearing bullet proof under the present All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership at the centre.
“Transparency International corruption report if you ask me is even mild on the country because we are worse than some of the countries that were rated ahead of us.
“Unless we are deceiving ourselves we are worse now that the T.I perception but when we raise the alarm some people think we are just making noise.
“One of the tragedy of this nation is that there are those who know that things are going badly; that we are not on the right track still they keep mute. I cannot. The truth is that corruption is getting sophisticated by the day under this government and they pretend that nothing is happening,” he told The Niche.
He said that the present APC-led government was chasing shadows with its selective style of pretending to fight the corruption malaise.
It will be recalled that the latest Corruption Perception Index (CPI) released Wednesday by Transparency International revealed that corruption is getting worse in Nigeria.
While the country scored 27/100 and was ranked 136th in 2016, the new CPI scores Nigeria 28/100 but with a rank 148 out of 180 countries surveyed — a significant 12 places below where it was the previous year.
