Commonwealth Games 2014: Okagbare bags gold, Amalaha provisionally suspended

-

Nigerian’s sprint sensation, Blessing Okagbare set a new record at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland 2014 late Monday with a time of 10.85 seconds, in the process bringing smiles to the faces of millions of Nigeria by winning the 100 metres gold for the games.

Africa’s fastest woman, Blessing Okagbare is expected to lead Team Nigeria to Glasgow 2014

Okagbare, in the race, was better than two other Jamaican athletes, Veronica Campbell-Brown and Kerron Stewart who emerged second and third in the race respectively. Nigeria’s Gloria Asumnu, who had also qualified for the final of the 100 metres final posted a disappointing performance as she was the last to get to the finish lines.

But it is now a case of mixed feelings for Nigeria, as the country’s gold medallist at the games in Weightlifting, Chika Amalaha, has been accused of doping.

However, it is not yet the end of the road for the 16-year-old weightlifter as officials have now requested a B sample test on the athlete which will be carried out on Wednesday, July 30.

According to the Commonwealth Games Federation chief executive, Mike Hooper, “We shouldn’t make assumptions at this juncture, but if she is found to be guilty she will be disqualified and stripped of her medal. This sets out a strong message that doping cheats will be caught.”

Amalaha’s A samples were found to contain both amilioride and hydrochlorothiazide, both banned substances as diuretics and masking agents.

Hooper added: “We are talking about the A sample. The athlete has requested a B sample and that will come through tomorrow (Wednesday)”. Chika Amalaha has been provisionally suspended from the tournament.
