British pundit and former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton has chided Portuguese winger Pedro Neto for picking up a red card against Arsenal in the Blues’ 2-1 Premier League defeat over the weekend.
He launched the scathing attack on the forward recently while speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live.
Arsenal scored from two trademark corners on Sunday to beat 10-man Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium and regain their five-point lead at the top of the league table.
Goals from William Saliba and Jurrien Timber secured the narrow win, despite an own goal from Gunners’ left-back Piero Hincapie.
However, with 20 minutes left to play, Neto—who was already on a yellow card—brought down Arsenal substitute Gabriel Martinelli and was given his marching orders by the referee.
Reacting to the incident, Sutton didn’t hold back as he slammed the Portuguese international, calling him “an idiot”.
He went on to argue that Neto’s ongoing issues with discipline are creating unnecessary hurdles for manager Liam Rosenior, especially as the club pushes for a top-four spot in the Premier League this season.
“Pedro Neto let Chelsea down badly. What an idiot, getting sent off like that,” Sutton fumed. He added, “This poor disciplinary record continues to hamper [Liam] Rosenior’s attempts to secure a top-four finish and progress further in European competition.”
Following the result, Chelsea now sit in sixth place in the league standings ahead of their crucial clash against Aston Villa on Wednesday.
