Nkechinyere, wife of Enugu Governor Peter Mbah, has announced scholarships for the three children (all under seven years) of a woman who committed suicide in the state last week due to financial hardship.

Nkechinyere announced the scholarships when she visited Ogui police station, Enugu where the children were kept in custody.

She said she would take care of the children and train them from nursery school to university, and directed their immediate relocation to a home where the state government will take care of them.

She implored people who are depressed to seek help and go for counseling to avoid taking drastic decisions.

Nkechinyere also urged Children, Gender and Social Development Commissioner Ngozi Enih to intensify sensitisation and counselling of people, especially those depressed, to help them overcome their predicament.

The unidentified mother of the three little children committed suicide by running into a moving vehicle in front of Ogui police station and died instantly, following her husband’s disappearance from home due to economic hardship.

The woman, who was suspected to be suffering from depression, dropped the children at the police station, pulled off her clothes, and ran naked into a moving vehicle which crushed her to death.

When asked about their father, the eldest child said he “got lost.”

“She [the child] could not give any other information about their family, their town, or residential address”, a police source said.
