The visitors will feel hard done by when they were denied a penalty when Trevoh and Chalobah held Jacob Murphy’s shirt in the penalty box.

The game looked to be heading towards a goalless draw when Kai Havertz controlled a ball from Jorginho and fired into the net in the 88th minute.

Newcastle’s Miguel Almiron had earlier forced a fine save from home goalkeeper Edouard Mendy with a well-struck 25-yard volley and Burn headed just wide.

Chelsea with the win have now gone 9 points clear of Manchester United in 4th with a game in hand and 10 games to play.

Newcastle have now lost a game after going unbeaten in 9 matches, but the travelling supporters reverted to a chant they rolled out in the first half to navigate the moral maze. ‘Mike Ashley, he’s coming for you’ even after the game.

Chelsea on the other hand had a small section of fans chanting Abramovich’s name, for a brief period in the second half.
