In one of the 4 games played after Manchester United’s early kick off, Chelsea welcomed Southampton, who is just a point above relegation to Stamford Bridge in West London.
The home side started brightly and scored the first goal of the match on the 9th min through Trevor Chalobah, after an assist from his team mate, Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
Chelsea got another goal on the 41st min through German striker, Timo Werner, but it was ruled offside after VAR check corrected the decision of the centre referee, Martin
Atkinson.
Southampton had good ball possession in the first half, but were unable to do much with it, as they had a single shot on target throughout the half.
A spot kick was awarded in favour of the away side, when Chelsea defended brought down a Southampton player in the second half. Their captain, James Ward-Prowse dispatched the penalty on 61st min to make the game 1-1.
The game thereafter, swung in the direction of the visitors until Ward-Prowse was given a red card for a challenge on a Chelsea defender and was subsequently sent off.
Chelsea became dominant after the red card and eventually scored another goal on the 84th minute through Timo Werner , whose goal was disallowed earlier.
Ben Chilwell made it a comfortable afternoon for Chelsea, when he got Chelsea’ s third goal on the 89th mins to end the game 3-1 in favour of the home side.
