Two years ago, the mantle of leadership of the Nigeria Police Force was handed to a man of unwavering integrity, strategic foresight, and uncommon professionalism — ushering in a new era of purposeful policing. As we commemorate the second anniversary of the appointment of Inspector General of Police, Dr. Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, it is imperative to not only celebrate his remarkable achievements in the last 24 months, but also to reflect on the legacy of excellence he has built throughout his distinguished career in the Force.

From his early days in the Nigeria Police Force, IGP Kayode Egbetokun has always stood out — not just for his academic brilliance, but also for his operational acumen, policy depth, and people-centered leadership. Rising through the ranks with a career marked by courage, competence, and compassion, he has consistently demonstrated a rare blend of tactical expertise and visionary leadership that has positively influenced the Force and Nigeria’s internal security architecture.

Throughout his years of service, he has held several command, investigative, and policy positions, earning accolades for his reform-driven mindset and leadership excellence. Whether in the field leading high-risk operations or in strategic roles crafting security frameworks, Egbetokun has remained a beacon of discipline, professionalism, and integrity.

Two Years of Transformative Leadership

Since assuming office as the 22nd indigenous Inspector General of Police on June 20, 2023, Egbetokun’s tenure has been defined by measurable improvements in the core pillars of policing: security, modernization, welfare, accountability, and community partnership. His leadership has inspired bold reforms and impactful strategies, placing the Nigeria Police Force on a more professional and citizen-oriented trajectory.

1. Enhanced Internal Security and Crime Control

Under IGP Egbetokun’s leadership, the Nigeria Police Force has adopted a more intelligence-led and proactive approach to tackling crime. Strategic deployments, improved logistics, and community engagement have led to a significant reduction in violent crimes, including armed robbery, kidnapping, and rural banditry.

He has emphasized data-driven policing and established operational Situation Rooms in several Police Commands across the country, thereby improving real-time intelligence gathering, surveillance, and rapid response operations. These initiatives have made policing smarter, faster, and more efficient.

2. Welfare and Capacity Building

One of the most remarkable areas of progress under IGP Egbetokun has been the enhanced welfare of personnel. He has actively championed improved access to healthcare, affordable housing schemes, and continuous training for officers across ranks.

Of particular note is his bold and patriotic advocacy for retired police officers to receive 100% of their last salary as pension — a transformational shift aimed at restoring dignity and economic stability to those who have served the nation with their lives. By pushing for this policy change, Egbetokun is ensuring that loyalty to the nation is rewarded, not punished, in retirement.

He has also ensured timely and merit-based promotions, reinforcing morale and establishing a performance-driven culture within the Force.

3. Community Policing and Trust Building

IGP Egbetokun has significantly advanced the implementation of community policing across the country. By establishing Community Policing Committees and recruiting local constabulary personnel to support intelligence gathering at the grassroots, he has deepened trust and collaboration between the Force and local communities.

These efforts have helped to de-escalate tensions, improve early threat detection, and strengthen the social contract between law enforcement and the public.

4. Technology and Digital Transformation

Modern policing requires technological innovation, and Egbetokun has positioned the Nigeria Police for digital-era relevance. His administration has introduced electronic crime reporting systems, e-warrant platforms, digital ID systems for personnel, and the digitization of the Central Criminal Registry.

These initiatives have enhanced transparency, reduced corruption, and ensured faster access to justice. The Nigeria Police under his leadership is more tech-savvy and responsive to the complexities of modern law enforcement.

5. Professionalism and Ethical Reforms

IGP Egbetokun has remained resolute in his commitment to discipline and professionalism. Under his leadership, the Force has taken a firm stance against misconduct. Officers found wanting are held accountable, with internal disciplinary processes leading to dismissals and sanctions where necessary.

He has prioritized ethical standards, accountability mechanisms, and citizen feedback in building a Force that Nigerians can once again trust.

A Visionary with a Plan for the Future

IGP Kayode Egbetokun is not merely leading for the present—he is laying foundations for the future. His advocacy for increased police funding, legal reforms, operational autonomy, and improved infrastructure speaks to a long-term vision: to transform the Nigeria Police into a world-class institution built on trust, efficiency, and integrity.

He continues to engage with the National Assembly and policy think-tanks to push for reforms that will make the Police Force more independent, better equipped, and more community-focused in its operations.

A Call for National Support

As the nation celebrates two years of impactful leadership under IGP Egbetokun, we must also recognize that security is a shared responsibility. His efforts must be matched by public cooperation, government support, and societal collaboration. A safer Nigeria is only possible when all stakeholders — police, government, and citizens — work together in unity and purpose.

Conclusion

The tenure of IGP Kayode Egbetokun is not only a success story — it is a benchmark in leadership, service, and innovation. His two years as Inspector General have demonstrated what is possible when passion meets professionalism and when leadership is driven by the genuine will to serve.

As we commemorate this milestone, we salute a man who has not only redefined policing in Nigeria but has also redefined what it means to lead with vision, purpose, and patriotism.

Congratulations to Dr. Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., Inspector General of Police. Nigeria salutes you.
