Pundit and former Liverpool defender, Jamie Carragher has said the decision of the Premier League (PL) to take away 10 points from Everton was “excessive and not right “

On Friday, November 17, the English league authority deducted 10 points from the points garnered by the Toffees so far this season, after it found the club guilty of breaking financial rules.

The Merseyside club had earlier been accused of breaching profitability and sustainability rules for a three-year period ending in the 2021-2022 season.

After the decision, Everton, who had 14 points and were sitting in the 14th position in the league, sunk to 19th position with just 4 points.

Reacting to the news via his X handle (formerly Twitter) England legend, Carragher disagreed with the decision

He went on to wonder whether Everton would have been better off dragging out their case as Manchester City have done with Pep Guardiola’s side still waiting to find out what punishment they will receive following the 115 charges currently hanging over them.

He also wished Everton, who are planning to appeal against the decision of the PL well.

Speaking via his social media page, Carragher tweeted: “The 10 point deduction for Everton is excessive and not right, considering they have been working with the PL about this for the last couple of years,” Carragher wrote on Twitter.

“Would it have been better to be evasive and try to drag it out like other clubs?

“No doubt relegated clubs will have put big pressure on the PL to deal with Everton, but when you consider 6 clubs tried to leave the PL and there was no sanction at all, it doesn’t feel right.

“Until other clubs are sanctioned Everton will feel they are being used to show there is no need for an independent regulator, and they are right.”
