Opposition leader in the Canadian election, Pierre Poilievre, on Tuesday  conceded defeat and congratulated the incumbent Prime Minister, Mark Carney.

This comes after the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. (CBC) projected that Carney’s Liberal Party would win the  national election strongly influenced by United States President, Donald Trump.

The media outfit, however, added that it was too early to know whether the Liberals would win enough seats to form a majority government, but projected another term for the party, which has governed Canada for almost a decade.

Following the projection, Conservative leader, Poilievre sent a congratulatory letter to the prime minister, Mark Carney on his imminent election victory.

He, however, noted that he would be leader of a minority government.

Poilievre also ruled out stepping down as Conservative leader, despite leading his party to an election defeat that was unexpected just months ago.

Addressing his supporters after the election, he said, “It will be an honour to continue to fight for you and be a champion for your cause as we go forward.”

Poilievre added, “We gained well over 20 seats, we got the highest vote share our party has received since 1988.”.
