Campbell made the comment when talking to Football Insider, asserting that De Jong is a far better player than Man Uniteds’ two central midfielders, Scott McTominay and Fred.

The highly rated Dutch player joined La Liga giant, Barcelona from Dutch outfit, Ajax for an initial sum of €75 million in 2019.

The 25-year-old has now been heavily linked with a move to Man United since the club appointed former Ajax coach, Erik Ten Hag, as their manager.

He said, “Frenkie de Jong is a player I covered a lot when I was working in Spain. He’s just brilliant”

The former Arsenal striker also argued that if Man United can secure the services of Frenkie de Jong this summer, their midfield will become a lot better.

He added that he is a versatile player who can play up to four different positions for his club.

Campbell added, “He’s way better than McTominay and Fred. He’s way above them. The key is getting him. They have got to get him.”

“If they get him in there, all of a sudden that midfield looks very different. He can do it all. I have seen him play in three or four different positions in one game, including as a centre-half. He did it all effortlessly. He’s a really, really good footballer.”
