Both nations were to play the second leg of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match on October 15, 2024. However, the Super Eagles were held hostage for hours at an airport in Libya, forcing the team to return to Nigeria after deciding against playing the match.

The announcement by CAF read: “The Libya Football Federation is found to have breached Article 31 of the African Cup of Nations Regulations as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.
