Burna Boy brags Grammy added new category because of him

Burna Boy won the “Best Global Music Album’ category at the 63rd Grammy Awards, with the album, ‘Twice As Tall’

Ace Afrobeats singer, Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has boasted that the Recording Academy, organisers of the prestigious Grammy Awards created the new “Best African Music Performance” category because of him.

The ‘Last Last’ crooner, whose album, ‘Twice As Tall’ won the “Best Global Music Album’ category at the 63rd Grammy Awards, stated this in a recent interview with Los Angeles Times.

Burna Boy, speaking during the interview, said he feels “responsible” for the creation of the new African music category, but wondered if the newly created category holds as much prestige as other categories.

The 30-year-old singer, while answering questions from the host of the show, claimed,  “I do feel somewhat responsible for the new ‘Best African Music Performance’ category, which is nice. At the same time, what is it really? Is it a consolation category? Will it hold as much prestige? I’m waiting to see.”

The organisers of the Grammy Awards in June created a category for ‘Best African Music Performance and revealed that it is open to both contemporary and traditional music from the African continent, including Afrobeats, Afro-pop, Amapiano, High Life, Fuji and other African genres.
