Sin, an infraction against God’s law, is being blamed for all the woes affecting Nigeria, including Meningitis

Sin is the problem , was first mooted by former Zamfara State governor, Abdulaziz Yari, in 2017 while explaining away the outbreak of Meningitis in his state. .
In January 2019, he declared three days intensive fasting and prayer session, to be accompanied by the recitation of the entire Quran by Muslim clerics and teachers, as part of efforts at curbing the insecurity challenges in the state.
At the time, the state’s commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs, Bello Dankande, said: ““We are soliciting for the intensive reading of the complete Holy Qur’an by Islamic scholars and their students to invoke Allah’s help.”
Sin comes up again
After this week’s brutal killing by bandits of about 40 Sokoto travelers, some youths in the North blamed President Muhammadu Buhari for not doing enough to curtail the situation, but others say it was the sin of the people that was inflaming the insecurity.
On Twitter, @Waspapping, a prominent Buhari supporter who got fed up with that kind of narrative, revolted: “People keep talking of sins and attributing it for the reason of insecurity in the north. I want someone to tell me what sin we are sinning in this part of the world that more of it is not happening in every other part of the world.”
@AhmdIbr, who holds the view that sin instead of bad governance, is the cause of Nigeria’s security lapses, countered: “You do not attend tafsirs nor consult your religious texts that is why. One of the gravest sins is talking and having says about the religion without knowledge. Don’t let your emotions make you do things you will regret
@Waspapping fired back: “When a southerner inevitably takes over this country & God forbid these killings continue, I want all of you that are attributing these killings to our wrong deeds to stick with the belief that all the killings are happening because of our wrong deeds not because of incompetency.”
@AhmdIbr responded: “Question: Are you debunking the clear texts of Qur’an that says the fitnah (test) is caused by our sins or it’s the scholar’s interpretation that you’re debunking? If it’s the later, you have to provide us with an acceptable explanation.”
@Waspapping then asked: “It’s the hypocrisy I don’t understand. Why wasn’t this excuse given to Jonathan during his tenure?”
