Buhari returns to Abuja after UN confab in Côte d’Ivoire

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday evening returned to Abuja from the capital of Cote d’Ivoire, Abidjan where he attended a Summit of Head of States and Government of he 15th session of the Conference Of the parties (COP15) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

Buhari, who departed Abuja on Sunday, May 8, 2022, returned around 6:10pm.

He delivered updates on Nigeria’s environmental efforts to the Summit with the theme ‘Land. Life. Legacy: From scarcity to prosperity’.

The president had at a side event of the summit urged the World Bank, African Development Bank and other partners to support the One Planet Summit initiative and activate the 19 billion dollars pledge.

Buhari, who is also the President of the Great Green Wall in Africa, was accompanied on the trip by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, Minister of Environment, Mohammed H. Abdullahi, Minister of Agriculture, Dr Mahmoud Mohammed and Minister of Water Resources, Engr Suleiman H. Adamu.

Also, on the President’s team to Abidjan were the National Security Adviser, Maj. Gen. Mohammed Monguno, Director General, National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Ahmed Rufai Abubakar and Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri- Erewa.

In his capacity as the President of the Conference of Heads of State and Governments of the member states of the PAGGW, Buhari said:

“The inter basin transfer of water from Central Africa to the lake Chad should be taken seriously.”

The meeting was President Buhari’s first assignment at the PAGGW Conference of Heads of State and Government following his election to head the institution in December last year.

NAN reports that the president’s Chief of Staff, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari and other government officials welcomed the president at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
