BudgIT founder leads N10b crowdfunding for Peter Obi’s presidential bid

Peter Obi’s presidential bid appears to excite young Nigerians who believe he has the economic expertise to lead Nigeria out of the woods

For three consecutive days, Peter Obi has remained a top trend on the micro blogging App, Twitter. But today, he became the number one trend, with at least 54,000 chatters referencing his name.

For many Nigerians that have been tweeting about Peter Obi, they see him as the most competent presidential aspirant that can lead Nigeria out of its current economic woes.

Peter Obi announced two days ago that he would be contesting the presidency if the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) zones its ticket to the South.

He had said: “Yes, I will step into the field to contest for the opportunity to serve this great country as President if my party, the @OfficialPDPNig, zones the ticket to the south. But if it is thrown open, Nigerians will also hear from me. –PO.”

A Peter Obi’s candidacy has been the trending subject on Twitter, with many Nigerians showing enthusiasm for the former Anambra State governor to replace President Muhammadu in the Villa in next year’s election.

The co-founder of BudgIT, Seun Onigbinde, added another twist to the Peter Obi’s presidential bid when in a tweet, he announced a GoFundMe for Peter Obi’s presidential bid.

Onigbinde’s GoFundMe initiative was coming a day after London-based publication Financial Times pegged the cost of electing a president in Nigeria at $2 billion, about N1 trillion, a news website, Peoples Gazette, noted,  adding that the crowdfunding would level the financial playing ground for Obi, who is likely to contend with moneybags such as Bola Tinubu and Orji Uzor Kalu.

“A N10bn GoFundMe for Peter Obi will be great starter for those who want crowdsource Nigeria’s next leader. This will change the dynamics with the space hijacked by moneybags,” tweeted the BudgIT boss.

The newspaper added that Onigbinde’s tweet had gained over a thousand retweets as many youths threw their weight behind Mr Obi.

While some users have already begun to suggest how the presidential hopeful can reach the grassroots for his campaign, others are interested in knowing his plan to tackle rising inflation and the nation’s economic slump.
