The British Council has partnered FilmOne Limited to bring British Opera productions to FilmHouse Cinemas, for the first time in Nigeria. Essentially, the productions will be screened at selected FilmHouse Cinemas across the country beginning from July 25 to the end of this month with Benjamin Britten’s Peter Grimes.
The partnership will also introduce ‘Event Cinema’ in Nigeria. A statement from the British Council said the unique concept offers alternative content to movies via visually refreshing stories told using the evergreen ‘Opera’ platform.
“We are very pleased about the partnership with FilmOne Distribution and FilmHouse Cinemas and look forward to sharing high quality performances from the UK with new audiences in their cinemas across Nigeria,” said Ojoma Ochai, Director Arts, British Council Nigeria.
What is more, the first 20 students to get to the FilmHouse Cinemas in Surulere, Dugbe, Samonda and Calabar will get free tickets to watch the show.
Peter Grimes is an opera in a prologue and three acts and is the first revival of director David Alden’s 2009 five-star, sell-out production.
The English National Opera is one of the world’s most innovative and accessible opera companies with international reputation for distinctive, contemporary and highly theatrical productions.

What really happened to fisherman Peter Grimes’ missing apprentice, and was he involved? As the townspeople’s mistrust grows, Peter Grimes spirals into a downfall with devastating consequences.
