BREAKING: Tinubu approves renaming of University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University

Gowon, a former head of state, was honoured with the renaming of the University of Abuja after him on his 90th birthday.

The federal government has renamed the University of Abuja, which is now to be known as Yakubu Gowon University.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, revealed the decision to journalists at the State House on Monday, following a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu.

The renaming is in honour of Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday.

Idris stated that the proposal will be forwarded to the National Assembly for formal approval.

Yakubu Gowon was a former Head of State and Nigeria’s leader during the civil war between 1967.

He became head of State following the Coup and Counter Coup of 1966 which led to the death of the then Prime Minister, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello, Western Regional Leader, Samuel Ladoke Akintola, Minister of Finance, Festus Okotie-Eboh.

The Coup and the Counter Coup also claimed the crop of the leadership of the Nation’s Military including head of State, General Aguiyi Ironsi, Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi and  many others.
