There is currently tension in parts of Kaduna State as a result of protest staged by members of the Shi’ia sect demanding the release of their leader, Shiek Ibrahim Zakzaky who was picked up by the Army on Saturday, TheCable reports.
Abdullahi Riko, who resides in the Tudun Wada area of the state, said the protesters are demanding only the release of Ibrahim Zakzaky.
Riko said banks, offices and other businesses have been closed, with people taking cover. “The protesters are out in their numbers. From Tudun Wada to Ahmadu Bello Way and other parts of the city,” he said. “Most people have remained indoors for fear of trouble. Some of them are armed and they have been chanting while marching.
“The military men are just miles away from them and we pray that they do not clash again.”
But Abdullahi Umaru, a corps member serving in the state, said the disturbances were only in some parts of the city.
“I am at Kao New Extension and no problem here. Everyone is going about his duties peacefully,” he said.
Efforts to reach Zubairu Abubakar, State Police spokesman were unsuccessful, as his phone line was out of reach and the response to the text message sent is being awaited. Earlier in the day, a picture of Zakzaky vomitting blood went viral on social media.
