Former coach Ole Gunnar Solskjær recently left his job after a poor run of results, the last being Sunday’s 4-1 thrashing by Watford.

Ole was replaced by his Assistant Coach and ex-United player, Michael Carrick, who won a UEFA Champions League game against Villarreal on Tuesday.

However, despite winning his first game in charge, it was believed the club was still in touch with other managers, who they wish to hire on an interim basis.

According to The Athletic, the agreement is subject to Rangnick’s current club, Lokomotiv, agreeing to release him from his contract, although Manchester United do not anticipate this to be a problem.

Rangnick is expected to continue in a consultancy role for another 2 years upon the expiration of the 6 months contract.

He is unlikely to be available for United’s next English Premier League game against league leader Chelsea, due to work permit reasons. Therefore, Michael Carrick will continue in his role.

Ralf Rangnick previously managed Hannover, Schalke, Hoffenheim, and RB Leipzig.

His reign at RB Leipzig, saw the club move from the regional league, the fourth tier to the Bundesliga, the first tier of German football.

He also had significant success as a director of football. He held that role for both Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig from 2012 onwards while having brief stints as manager at Leipzig.

His appointment put paid to suggestions that the former Barcelona coach, Ernesto Valverde is the leading candidate for the role of interim coach at United.
