BREAKING: Police teargas, disperse protesters at 2nd anniversary of #EndSARS

Police stormed the scene, fired teargas at the protesters and dispersed them.

Police personnel from the Lagos State Command on Thursday fired teargas to disperse protesters commemorating the 2nd year anniversary of the EndSARS movement at the Lekki Tollgate.

In a live footage, protesters were seen running helter-skelter for safety and there are photos of several arrest made at the scene of the incident.

The protester had come out on Thursday morning led by popular musician, Falz and actor, Mr. Macaroni to stage a peaceful walk at the Lekki tollgate in commemoration of the shooting that took place therein two years ago during the #EndSARS protests that rocked many parts of the country. Lagos was regarded as the epicenter of the protests.

The youths had in a nation-wide rally in 2020, protested the highhandedness of the police and other security personnel against Nigerians. The action which took off on a peaceful note, affected some parts of the country, affecting vehicular movements.

 The youths involved, had presented the five demands as conditions to vacate Lekki, tollgate, considered as their take-off point and other areas where they gathered. They were: Immediate release of all arrested protesters; Justice for all deceased victims of police brutality and appropriate compensation for their families; Setting up an independent body to oversee the investigation and prosecution of all reports of Police misconduct (within 10days); In line with police act, psychological evaluation and retaining (to be confirmed by an independent body) of all disbanded SARS officers before they can be redeployed; Increase Police salary so that they are adequately compensated for protecting lives and property of citizens.

These demands were not fully met when soldiers opened fire on the youths at Lekki tollgate on October 20, allegedly killing many protesters and injuring others. There has been confusion on the outcome of the reports of a panel of inquiry set up by Lagos State government to investigate the incident.

The youths had gathered in a peaceful commemorative walk over the shooting when police stormed the scene to fire teargas at the people and dispersed them from the scene.
