National coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, told journalists that Obi and John Odigie-Oyegun, among other ADC leaders, were in Edo State to witness the former president of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Olumide Akpata, join the ADC formally.

“The leadership of the ADC is under siege and attack in Benin, Edo State,” he said.

“At the formal declaration of Olumide Akpata into the African Democratic Congress, armed individuals followed us from the ADC Secretariat to the residence of Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.

“They shot at the gate and destroyed several vehicles in what appears to be a failed assassination attempt on our lives.”

Akpata was the governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Edo State in 2024. Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) won the election.

The assailants, it was gathered, damaged vehicles in the attack.

Obi’s media adviser, Valentine Obienyem, explained further in a statement made available to TheNiche.

“Mr. Peter Obi visited the ADC secretariat, where he joined the former governors of Edo State, Chief John Oyegun and Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor, as well as other ADC leaders, to welcome Barr. Olumide Akpata into the party,” he said.

“While there, they noticed unusual activities by individuals in Siena buses. As Obi left the secretariat for Chief Oyegun’s residence, these vehicles followed him. Initially, the convoy did not suspect anything, as the movements of the Siena buses appeared inconspicuous.

“Once Obi’s car entered the residence and the gate was shut, the Siena buses arrived and opened fire on the convoy. At that time, Obi’s vehicle was safely inside, while security vehicles and backup personnel were still outside.

“The hoodlums, suspected to be on a mission, fired at multiple vehicles and attempted to breach Chief Oyegun’s residence, shooting repeatedly at the gates, until security personnel returned fire, forcing them to flee.

“Thankfully, no lives were lost, though several people sustained varying degrees of injuries.”
