Labour relaxes strike for one week. “The joint NEC meeting of TUC/NLC only agreed to relax the industrial action for one week with immediate effect. The strike was not suspended. We are giving the government the benefit of the doubt.”

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), on Tuesday, relaxed their industrial action after a 24-hour shutdown of the economy.

The suspension of the strike was announced today by the organised labour despite a lack of consensus on a new minimum wage.

The Unions said the suspension will last for one week.

The TUC President Festus Osifo said this on Tuesday in Abuja after a joint extraordinary national executive council meeting of the unions.

The Labour chief said a communique will be issued shortly.

Both unions downed tools on Monday to register their grievances over the hike in electricity tariff and lack of consensus on a new minimum wage.

The development paralyzed activities in critical sectors of the economy with schools, businesses, hospitals, and airports shut. The national grid was also shut down, throwing the nation into darkness.

But an NLC chieftain who spoke to TheNiche said the strike was only relaxed, not suspended.

“The joint NEC meeting of TUC/NLC only agreed to to relax the industrial action for one week with immediate effect. The strike was not suspended. We are giving the government the benefit of the doubt,” he said.
