The 20 medical students recently abducted in Benue State by gunmen have regained their freedom.
Although details on how they were rescued remained sketchy, sources close to the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) confirmed the development to Channels Television on Friday.
According to the report, the operation was coordinated by the NSA.
The security agencies involved in the rescue mission included the Nigerian police, the Department of State Services (SSS), and military personnel with the support of the Benue state government.
Earlier, the police deployed helicopters in an effort to rescue abducted medical students.
The 20 medical and dental students and a house officer were kidnapped on August 16 by gunmen on their way to Enugu State
Prior to the rescue operation, the kidnappers had rejected a N20 million ransom allegedly raised by the Catholic community in Nigeria.
This was disclosed on Thursday by the president of the Community of Tiv Students at the University of Maiduguri, Prince Tihi Maxwell, whose two members were among the abducted students.
