Britain’s head of state King Charles III officially appointed Labour leader Keir Starmer as prime minister on Friday during an audience at Buckingham Palace, according to Agency Reports

A photograph released by the palace showed the monarch shaking hands with Starmer, whose party won a landslide election victory.

The king earlier accepted the resignation of Conservative leader Rishi Sunak.

“The King received in audience The Right Honourable Sir Keir Starmer MP today and requested him to form a new Administration,” Vanguard quoted palace statement as reporting

“Sir Keir accepted His Majesty’s offer and kissed hands upon his appointment as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury.”

Keir Starmer became Britain’s new prime minister as his centre-left opposition Labour party swept to a landslide general election victory.

TheNiche had earlier reported that Starmer would likely replace Rishi Sunak as the Prime Minister after election results showed his party was in a comfortable lead.

According to exit polls on Thursday night, Britain’s main opposition, Labour Party looks set for a landslide election win.

Labour Party was, however, declared the official winner of the poll after reaching the required 326 parliamentary seats on Friday.

The victory for the major opposition party marked an end to the 14 years rule of right-wing Conservative party.

Addressing a cheering crowd in Central London after his victory, Starmer said: “We did it, change begins now. It feels good, I have to be honest.”
