In what appears to be a last ditch effort to put out the fire threatening to incinerate its chances in the 2023 election, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) on Friday urged the party’s embattled National Chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, “as an eminent leader, to give firm assurance that he will resign his position after the 2023 election.”

The party’s conscience as the BoT is called met on Friday in Abuja.

Reading the resolutions of the BoT meeting, the Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, said that in the same vein, “the BoT chairman was authorised to offer apologies on behalf of all members of the party who feel maligned or aggrieved by the public statements made by its members nationwide that have sharpened the current division in the party.”

In an apparent effort to placate the Nyesom Wike-led rebel group in the party whose antics have threatened to scuttle the chances of the party in winning the 2023 elections, Wabara said, “The BoT also called on the presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, to review the membership of the Presidential Campaign Council and other advisory appointments to make them all-inclusive.”

The BoT also agreed to refer some of the recommendations for noting and appropriate action to NEC of the party in due course.

The meeting on the other hand called on all party leaders and persons close to them to desist forthwith from making further inflammatory remarks or press interview.

It also called on the chairman of the PDP Governors Forum to convene a meeting of the forum without further delay.

It remains to be seen if the resolutions will assuage the feelings of members of the Wike camp that includes five governors and other eminent members of the party.

Wike and his group have insisted that nothing other than the immediate resignation of Ayu is acceptable to them.
