Ex-Imo PDP spokesperson escapes assassination, blames political opponents

The uncertain security climate in Imo state rose higher again, as gunmen, suspected to be political assassins attacked and shot at the vehicle of Ex-spokesperson of the Imo state chapter of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Collins Opuozor.

The incident, according to reports, happened on Thursday, Agust 10. Opuozor who confirmed the incident to newsmen on Tuesday in Owerri, Opuozor, said it took place at Akwakuma/Mbieri Road in Owerri.

No reason was given for the attacks by the said assassins, but Opuozor, was of the view that; “The incident could be linked to politics, adding that “For other vehicles that also parked around my own to be left untouched, it may mean that I was a target. Remember it was on Wednesday that we dragged some PDP leaders who had lied that we embezzled N1.4 billion to the police.

“I escaped attack on Thursday, August 10. It happened at Akwakuma junction by Mbieri Road Thursday evening. Apharmaceutical shop owner was abducted in the process. I parked the car and stepped out shortly before the attack came.”

It should be recalled that Opuozor had raised series of alarm over his life since he left his former political party.

According to residents, tension has been rising in the state, ahead of the November 11, 2023 governorship election, where seventeen candidates would be contesting. Aside the governorship election, Imo has lately been a centre of attacks by the so-called unknown gunmen.

Recently, Nigerian Army issued red card to criminals in the state while restating its resolve to end all incidences of insecurity in the south east geo-political zone and restore peace in the area. To that effect, the new General Officer Commanding 82 Division, Enugu, Major General Hassan Dada, vowed that all non-state actors would be pursued and all forms of criminality stamped out in the region forthwith.

Dada made the disclosure during a familiarisation visit to Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State at the Government House in Owerri, the Imo State capital, having just assumed his new office as the GOC 82 Division.
