US President-elect Donald Trump has paid glowing tribute to his predecessor, Jimmy Carter, who died on Sunday at the age of 100 years.

CNN reports quoted Trump as saying that the  American nation owes former President Jimmy Carter “a debt of gratitude”.

“I just heard of the news about the passing of President Jimmy Carter. Those of us who have been fortunate to have served as President understand this is a very exclusive club, and only we can relate to the enormous responsibility of leading the Greatest Nation in History,” Trump wrote in a social media post on Sunday.

“The challenges Jimmy faced as President came at a pivotal time for our country and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans. For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude,” he continued. “Melania and I are thinking warmly of the Carter Family and their loved ones during this difficult time. We urge everyone to keep them in their hearts and prayers.”

Trump’s remarks come as former President, Bill Clinton and his wife, Hillary express gratitude for Carter’s “long, good life”

The Clintons released a statement on the passing of former President Jimmy Carter and remembered his legacy as a public servant.

“Hillary and I mourn the passing of President Jimmy Carter and give thanks for his long, good life. Guided by his faith, President Carter lived to serve others—until the very end,” the CNN quotes the Clintons as writing.

Jimmy Carter, the 100-year-old former U.S. president and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, passed away Sunday afternoon at his home in Plains, Georgia, after nearly two years in hospice care, according to U.S. media reports citing his son, Chip Carter. He was the 39th US president
