BREAKING: 10 confirmed dead, eight injured in Oyo building collapse

Oyo Police Command has confirmed 10 persons dead and eight others injured when a building collapsed in Jegede, Ibadan, Oyo state capital.

The Oyo Police Command has confirmed 10 persons dead and eight others injured when a building collapsed in Jegede, Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.

This was contained in a statement by Oyo Police spokesman, Adewale Osifeso. The release stated: “Today being Thursday 31/10/2024 around 0200hrs, a storey building located around Ojugbede Jegede Area, Ogbere collapsed leading to the immediate loss of (10) ten lives while eight others are currently battling with various degrees of life threatening injuries.

 “Adequate security has currently been emplaced in the Area to prevent hoodlums from taking over the incident scene and as well protect the lives and property of other residents within the Jurisdiction.”

He said investigation was ongoing to unravel circumstance that could have led to the incident, saying updates would be provided accordingly.

The General Manager of Oyo State Fire Service, Yemi Akinyinka, had earlier stated that the Service got a distress call around 2 am from residents of the area that a building had collapsed trapping many under the rubble.

“May I inform you that Oyo State Fire Services Agency received a distressed call at around 2 am this morning at Jegede, Olunloyo area, Ibadan of which 10 persons have been recovered from the debris of the collapsed building, while seven persons were rescued alive.  Rescue operation is still going on.”

The Ibadan incident took place less than a week Abuja building collapse in which seven persons were confirmed dead.

The accident which happed in Vidaz Estate, within the Sabon Lugbe extension, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) involved an uncompleted storey building.

The Federal Capital Territory FCT Emergency Management Department, (FEMD), disclosed the figure of the dead on Sunday, a day after the accident.
